Dutch digital duo Weval have launched their fourth studio album, ‘Chorophobia’, out now on Ninja Tune’s Technicolour imprint. The file arrives alongside a self-directed video for his or her latest single, ‘Open Up That Door ft. Kilimanjaro’. Watch proper right here.
The new album sees Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte Albers embracing dancefloor dynamics further instantly than ever sooner than, tough the introspective mindset that fashioned earlier releases like 2019’s ‘The Weight’ and 2023’s ‘Remember’. Sparked by the invention of the time interval “chorophobia” — the fear of dancing — the duo leaned into its irony and let go of long-held inhibitions.
“Until that point, we had always labored on knowledge with a ‘listening’ mindset,” says Harm. “We realised that we’ve been fearful of establishing dance music for all of our journey as producers.” The consequence’s their most extroverted work however — full of high-energy cuts, model shifts, and daring rhythmic choices.
The album incorporates present singles ‘Dopamine’, ‘Just Friends’, and ‘Movement’, with stylistic nods ranging from acid synths to funk, UK bass, and even Motown textures. Tracks like ‘Mercator’ current a hyperlink to their earlier catalogue, whereas the collaboration with Kilimanjaro on ‘Head First’ offers new vocal dimensions to their sound.
Weval will assist the album with a headline UK/EU tour this autumn, along with a stop at Hackney Church in London.
