Audium, an interactive theater for spatial electronic sound, is creating an experience where attendees can hear field recordings and electronic sounds dating back to the late ’60s.
Running now until July 22nd, Audium V: Rewind is the revival of Audium V, a composition written by Audium co-founder Stan Shaff in 1969. Decades ago, the piece premiered in the space’s original location—an old lodge hall in San Francisco’s Richmond District. For the current show, Shaff’s son, David Shaff, has reworked the performance for Audium’s modern sound system of 176 speakers. He will also perform every night of the show.
The original work will get a further update with the involvement of multidisciplinary artist Ava Koohbor, who has redesigned the venue’s lobby with sculptural speakers built from metals and raw materials. The speakers, according to Audium’s website, were built with the intention of exploring “the physicality of sound.”
