Starting tonight, July 19th, True Form presents Request Line is made up of records that were rescued by archive project True Form when Oriental Star closed its doors in 2017. The launch party includes a conversation with the project’s lead archivist Faisal Hussain, DJ sets from Rizmi and Chandé, and the first chance to see the exhibition.
The exhibition, which is part of South Asian Heritage Month, follows local music magazine SEEN’s takeover of Manchester Museum earlier this month. Sonics, Stories and Scenes of the Diaspora explored the impact of South Asian artists on the global music scene via panel discussions, film screenings and workshops, among other things.
Started by Mohammed Ayubin in the Balsall Heath area of Birmingham in 1970, Oriental Star Agencies helped launch the careers of artists such as Bally Sagoo, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Malkit Singh.
Set up in 2012, True Form Projects is a social enterprise that specialises in collecting oral histories, artefacts and personal stories. Most of the organisation’s work centres around the UK’s South Asian diaspora communities.
