While DJ Deeon’s 1996 launch Freak Like Me has been a membership staple for years, the identification of the vocalist has remained a thriller for 28 years. Until now.
Thanks to Berlin DJ Sarah Farina, it has been revealed that Tish Bailey is the girl who sings the dancefloor basic. However, Bailey has not obtained a penny from her involvement.
In order to compensate for almost three a long time of no credit score, Farina has set up a GoFundMe to support the wronged singer.
“Imagine the voice in Freak Like Me is your personal, recorded throughout a studio hang around with a good friend and swapped between producers with out your permission,” the GoFundMe reads. “Now think about you had been by no means credited or paid a price or royalties and easily ignored after being promised it could be ‘made proper’.”
At the time, Bailey didn’t have entry to the authorized assist to argue her case. She had given up any hope of receiving compensation. That is, till DJ Farina hunted Bailey down and provided their assist in 2019.
An avid Freak Like Me Fan, Farina religiously performed DJ Deeon’s basic throughout their units. It turned their mission to find who the voice belonged to – and, after relentless looking, they quickly reached out to Bailey.
In an Instagram submit, Farina shared Bailey’s story. Farina explains how Bailey recorded vocals at DJ Funk’s studio on the age of 19 and heard nothing extra of it – solely to listen to them years later at a home celebration when a DJ performed DJ Deeon’s Freak Like Me.
“Since its 1st launch in 1996, each unbiased and main label artists have sampled, remixed and re-released lyrics written & sang by Tish Bailey,” the submit reads. “Like could Black femme artists and vocalists, Tish’s voice was used with out her being credited, paid a price or given royalties.”
While the GoFundMe goals to assist Tish, Farina can be uplifting Bailey’s voice by having her characteristic on the DJ’s upcoming EP Stay Soft, out 5 April.
Bailey herself has spoken out in gentle of the GoFundMe marketing campaign. “Though I by no means desired fame or notoriety, understanding tens of millions worldwide have heard my voice and loved it for many years and proceed to even at the moment, brings me pleasure,” she writes on her website.
