KOMA, a boutique company from Berlin, created the sequencer in 2015 but ran into component shortages and had to cease production in 2020. Now, as supply chains finally recover post-Covid-19, KOMA has produced another run of its much-loved machine. Orders are open now, with the first batch expected to ship in September.
Komplex is a powerful sequencer built around four full-featured, 16-step event generators that communicate both MIDI and CV/Gate. All four 16-step sequencers can be run in series, giving you a 64-step sequencer. There are no screens or sub-menus, and all controls have their own dedicated sliders, buttons and knobs.
Everything is routable using an 87-point patch bay and every aspect of the sequencer accepts controlled voltage signals. It also features a seven bank CV recorder and can output up to five banks at once.
It was built as the ultimate way to control large, complex modular rigs in the simplest and most intuitive way possible—and it was an instant hit with modular musicians. However, in 2020, faced with serious component shortages, KOMA announced it was unable to produce any more. Since then, their price on the second-hand market has risen, as no other company has been able to produce anything like as comprehensive.
The new run has a few updates. For example, the transpose CV input now also transposes the MIDI notes that a sequencer is producing. It’s about 30 percent more expensive than the initial run, too.
